In 2017, a revolutionary non-profit called MORTAR decided to ditch the curriculum they were licensing for their 14-week startup accelerator. Together, we created a new book called MORTAR MASTERS.
We lead our clients through a creative exercise to understand their style and voice and researched educational design and the psychology of visually organizing hierarchies of information. MORTAR MASTERS intentionally does not look like any other text book in existence. Our audience desired more visual cues, more exercises and activities and a conversational linguistic style that is as informative as it is inspiring. We chose contemporary typefaces with high visibility.
We extended MORTAR’s color palette to create chapter systems and custom-created artwork for chapter headers. We developed a photographic style that reflected the overall energy of the book’s voice and custom systems and designs for typographic layout, exercises, appendices, icons, and quotes. The book is over 300 pages, contains over 35,000 words, but still fits in a purse.
